Travis Boyer, Profile Picture

Performance, 4 Aug. 2012

Travis Boyer presents a performance piece designed to engage its audience. “Profile Pic” takes its inspiration from the ubiquitous portrait image overload that floats through the world wide web. Rather than staring at a remote digital file the performance will facilitate blind portraits of audience members grouped in pairs. The exercise enacts a non-verbal communication between the partners and exposes the participants as both objects and subjects of the process. The project joins touching with image generation. The performance opens up a critical dialog about the self-generated profile pictures as used on online dating sites such as grindr, facebook, manhunt and the alike. The blind portraits extract the psychic aura of the depicted person rather than their visual appearance.
